Common use

Dosage and direction

Take Nexium exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. The typical adult dose for GERD is 20 mg or 40 mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks. For maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis, the recommended dose is 20 mg daily. Administer at least one hour before a meal, preferably in the morning. Swallow capsules whole; do not crush or chew. For those unable to swallow capsules, the contents may be mixed with applesauce or prepared as a liquid suspension.

Precautions

Before using Nexium, inform your doctor if you have liver disease, low magnesium levels, or osteoporosis. Long-term use may increase the risk of bone fractures, vitamin B12 deficiency, and Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.
