Bactroban Ointment 5g: Topical Antibiotic for Bacterial Skin Infection Treatment

Bactroban Ointment 5g contains the active ingredient mupirocin 2% w/w, a potent antibiotic specifically formulated for topical application. It is indicated for the treatment of superficial bacterial skin infections, such as impetigo, folliculitis, and secondarily infected traumatic skin lesions, caused by susceptible strains of organisms, notably Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. This formulation is designed for localized action, minimizing systemic absorption and focusing therapeutic effect directly at the site of infection. Its efficacy and targeted mechanism make it a first-line choice in dermatological and primary care settings for uncomplicated skin infections.

Features

  • Contains mupirocin 2% w/w as the active pharmaceutical ingredient
  • Presented in a 5g tube for precise, convenient application
  • White, translucent, water-soluble ointment base
  • Specifically formulated for topical use only
  • Exhibits bactericidal activity against Gram-positive bacteria
  • Stable at room temperature; does not require refrigeration

Benefits

  • Effectively eradicates localized bacterial skin infections, reducing spread and complications
  • Minimizes risk of systemic antibiotic resistance by providing targeted, topical therapy
  • Promotes rapid healing of infected lesions, reducing pain, erythema, and exudate
  • Easy to apply, with minimal mess or residue due to its water-soluble base
  • Suitable for use in both adult and pediatric populations (from 2 months of age)
  • Helps prevent recurrence when used as directed for the full prescribed duration

Common use

Bactroban Ointment is primarily prescribed for the topical treatment of impetigo, a contagious superficial skin infection characterized by honey-colored crusts, often caused by S. aureus or S. pyogenes. It is also used for other localized bacterial skin infections such as folliculitis, furunculosis, and infected minor wounds, lacerations, or abrasions. Healthcare providers may recommend it for small areas of infected eczema or dermatitis where bacterial superinfection is confirmed or strongly suspected. It is not intended for use on mucous membranes, large body surfaces, or deep/abscessed infections.

Dosage and direction

A small amount of ointment should be applied to the affected area three times daily (approximately every 8 hours). The area may be covered with a gauze dressing if desired. Before application, the affected area should be gently cleansed and dried. Wash hands before and after applying the ointment. The usual duration of treatment is up to 10 days. If no clinical improvement is observed after 3–5 days, the diagnosis and treatment plan should be re-evaluated. Do not use for longer than prescribed.

Precautions

Use only on the skin; avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, or other mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. Do not use on large areas of broken skin or severe burns due to increased risk of systemic absorption of polyethylene glycol. Use with caution in patients with moderate or severe renal impairment. Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If superinfection occurs, discontinue use and institute appropriate therapy. This product should not be used for the prophylaxis of bacterial infections.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to mupirocin or any other component of the formulation. Not for ophthalmic, intranasal, or internal use. Should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to polyethylene glycol. Contraindicated in cases where the infection involves deep tissues, abscesses, or requires systemic antibiotic therapy.

Possible side effect

Most common local reactions include burning, stinging, pain, or itching at the application site. Less frequently, patients may experience nausea, erythema, dryness, or contact dermatitis. Rarely, systemic reactions such as headache, rash, or nausea may occur, particularly if used on large body surface areas. Very rare cases of anaphylaxis, angioedema, and generalized urticaria have been reported. Discontinue use if severe irritation or hypersensitivity reaction develops.

Drug interaction

No specific drug interactions have been formally studied with topical mupirocin. However, concurrent use with other topical products (e.g., corticosteroids, acne medications) on the same area may cause physical or chemical interaction, or increase skin irritation. It is advisable to avoid applying other topical agents to the same site unless directed by a physician.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

Topical overdose is unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption. However, accidental ingestion may lead to nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical attention. Topical application over very large body surface areas, especially with impaired skin barrier, might lead to systemic exposure; in such cases, monitor for potential systemic effects and discontinue use.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–30Β°C). Do not freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use. Protect from excessive heat and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging.
