Common use

Proscalpin is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. It is prescribed for adult men experiencing mild to moderate hair loss at the vertex and anterior mid-scalp area. Treatment is most effective for individuals who initiate therapy early in the hair loss process. It is not indicated for use by women or children.

Dosage and direction

The recommended dosage is one 1mg tablet administered orally once daily, with or without food. For optimal absorption, it is advisable to take the tablet at approximately the same time each day. Clinical response may not be evident for at least three months, and continued use is generally necessary to sustain benefits. Discontinuation of treatment typically leads to a reversal of effect within 12 months.

Precautions

Prior to initiation, a proper diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia should be confirmed. Patients should be informed that decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculation disorders are known potential side effects, which may persist after discontinuation in some cases. Caution is advised in patients with liver function abnormalities. Women who are or may potentially be pregnant must not handle crushed or broken tablets due to the risk of absorption and potential teratogenic effects on a male fetus.

Contraindications

Possible side effects

Other less common side effects may include breast tenderness and enlargement, rash, and testicular pain. Allergic reactions, including lip swelling and skin rash, have been reported.

Drug interaction

Although no specific drug interactions of clinical importance have been identified, caution is advised when administering Proscalpin concurrently with other medications that are extensively metabolized by the CYP3A4 enzyme system. Always inform your healthcare provider of all prescription, non-prescription, and herbal products you are taking.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, it should be skipped and the next dose taken at the regular scheduled time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Maintaining a consistent daily routine is recommended for optimal efficacy.

Overdose

In the event of a suspected overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be instituted. Single doses of finasteride up to 400 mg and multiple doses up to 80 mg/day for three months have been administered without adverse effect. There is no specific antidote for finasteride overdose.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Excursions are permitted between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F). Keep the tablets in their original blister packaging to protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
