Aleve: Effective 12-Hour Relief from Musculoskeletal Pain
Aleve is a trusted over-the-counter analgesic and anti-inflammatory medication, formulated with naproxen sodium as its active ingredient. It is specifically engineered to provide long-lasting relief from a variety of pain and inflammatory conditions. Clinically proven to deliver up to 12 hours of continuous symptom management with a single dose, it is a preferred choice for both acute and chronic pain sufferers. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, thereby reducing prostaglandin synthesis and mitigating pain and inflammation at the source.
Features
- Active ingredient: Naproxen sodium 220 mg per tablet/caplet
- Pharmacological class: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Duration of action: Up to 12 hours of continuous relief per dose
- Formulation options: Tablets, caplets, liquid gels, and easy-open arthritis caplets
- Non-prescription strength, suitable for OTC use
- Coated for easier swallowing and reduced gastric irritation
- Alcohol-free and sugar-free formulation
Benefits
- Provides extended relief from musculoskeletal pain, reducing the frequency of dosing compared to shorter-acting analgesics
- Effectively reduces inflammation at the site of injury or condition, addressing the root cause of pain rather than merely masking symptoms
- Allows for improved mobility and daily functioning by alleviating stiffness and discomfort associated with arthritis and other inflammatory conditions
- Minimizes the need for frequent re-dosing, supporting adherence and convenience for individuals with chronic pain
- Offers a non-opioid alternative for pain management, reducing the risk of dependency and central nervous system side effects
- Can be used for a broad spectrum of pain types, including headache, menstrual cramps, toothache, and minor arthritis pain
Common use
Aleve is commonly used for the temporary relief of mild to moderate pain associated with conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, tendinitis, bursitis, and acute gout. It is also indicated for the management of primary dysmenorrhea, headache, dental pain, and musculoskeletal injuries such as sprains and strains. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it particularly suitable for conditions where inflammation contributes significantly to pain symptomatology.
Dosage and direction
For adults and children 12 years and older: The initial dose is 220 mg (one tablet/caplet), followed by 220 mg every 8 to 12 hours as needed. The total daily dose should not exceed 660 mg (three tablets/caplets) in a 24-hour period, unless directed by a physician. It is recommended to take with a full glass of water to aid swallowing and reduce the risk of gastrointestinal upset. To minimize potential esophageal irritation, the patient should remain upright for at least 10 minutes after ingestion. Use the smallest effective dose for the shortest duration consistent with individual treatment goals.
Precautions
Patients should consult a healthcare provider before use if they have a history of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, heart failure, or edema, as NSAIDs may increase the risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events. Use with caution in individuals with pre-existing renal impairment, dehydration, or hypovolemia, due to the risk of acute kidney injury. Avoid concomitant use with other NSAIDs, including aspirin, to prevent additive effects and increased risk of adverse reactions. Not recommended for use beyond 10 days for pain or 3 days for fever unless directed by a physician. Discontinue use and seek medical advice if painful or difficult swallowing, chest pain, or severe epigastric pain occurs.
Contraindications
Aleve is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to naproxen, aspirin, or other NSAIDs. It should not be used in individuals who have experienced asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs. Contraindicated in the setting of peri-operative pain in the context of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Do not use in patients with a history of gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation related to previous NSAID therapy. Not for use in patients with severe hepatic impairment or active peptic ulcer disease.
Possible side effect
Common side effects may include nausea, epigastric pain, heartburn, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, and mild peripheral edema. Less frequently, gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration, or perforation may occur, sometimes fatally. Serious but rare adverse effects include hepatotoxicity, renal papillary necrosis, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and severe skin reactions such as exfoliative dermatitis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported. Patients should discontinue use and contact a healthcare provider if any severe or persistent side effects occur.
Drug interaction
Concomitant use with aspirin or other NSAIDs may increase the risk of gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding. Aleve may reduce the antihypertensive effect of ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, and diuretics. It can increase lithium plasma levels, potentially leading to lithium toxicity. Concurrent use with methotrexate may elevate methotrexate plasma concentrations, increasing the risk of hematologic and renal toxicity. May enhance the effects of warfarin and other anticoagulants, increasing the risk of bleeding. Use with corticosteroids or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may further increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
Missed dose
As Aleve is taken on an as-needed basis for pain relief, there is no strict dosing schedule. If a dose is missed and pain returns, take the missed dose as soon as remembered, provided it is not too close to the next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one. For regular dosing under medical supervision, follow the specific instructions provided by the healthcare provider.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, drowsiness, dizziness, nystagmus, apnea, metabolic acidosis, coma, and acute renal failure. In case of suspected overdose, seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center. Management is supportive and may include gastric lavage or activated charcoal if ingestion was recent. Hemodialysis is not effective due to high protein binding of naproxen.
Storage
Store at room temperature, between 20Β°C and 25Β°C (68Β°F and 77Β°F), in a dry place protected from light and moisture. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children and pets. Do not use if the blister pack or bottle seal is broken or missing. Discard any unused medication after the expiration date printed on the packaging.
