Common use
Alavert is commonly used for the relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever), such as sneezing, rhinorrhea, pruritus of the nose/palate/throat, and ocular itching and watering. It is also indicated for the management of perennial allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives of unknown cause). Patients often use it proactively before anticipated allergen exposure (e.g., before going outdoors during high pollen seasons) or reactively upon symptom onset.
Dosage and direction
For adults and children 6 years of age and older: take one 10 mg tablet once daily. Do not exceed one tablet in 24 hours. For orally disintegrating tablets: place tablet on tongue; it dissolves rapidly and can be swallowed with or without water. Do not chew or break the tablet. For standard tablets: swallow whole with water. Dosing may be taken with or without food. For pediatric patients under 6 years of age, consult a healthcare provider for appropriate dosing.
Precautions
Do not use if you have known hypersensitivity to loratadine or any inactive ingredients. Use with caution in patients with liver impairment; dosage adjustment may be necessary. While generally non-drowsy, exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how Alavert affects you. If symptoms do not improve after 3 days of use, or if condition worsens, discontinue use and consult a physician. Keep out of reach of children.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to loratadine or any component of the formulation. Contraindicated in patients with severe hepatic impairment without appropriate dosage adjustment. Not recommended for children under 6 years of age unless directed by a physician. Should not be used by patients taking certain antifungal agents (e.g., ketoconazole) or macrolide antibiotics (e.g., erythromycin) without medical supervision due to potential interactions.
Possible side effect
While generally well-tolerated, possible side effects may include headache, somnolence (though uncommon), fatigue, dry mouth, nervousness, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, urticaria, or bronchospasm are rare. In clinical trials, the incidence of side effects was similar to placebo. If any unusual or severe reactions occur, discontinue use and seek medical attention.
Drug interaction
Loratadine is metabolized primarily by CYP3A4 and CYP2D6 enzymes. Concomitant use with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin) or CYP2D6 inhibitors may increase loratadine plasma concentrations. Use with caution with other central nervous system depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives) though interactions are minimal. Inform your healthcare provider of all medications, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products.
Missed dose
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Overdose
In case of suspected overdose, symptoms may include drowsiness, tachycardia, and headache. Seek immediate medical attention or contact a Poison Control Center. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic; gastric lavage may be considered if ingestion was recent. Loratadine is not effectively removed by dialysis.
Storage
Store at room temperature (20–25°C or 68–77°F). Keep in original blister package until use to protect from moisture. For orally disintegrating tablets, ensure hands are dry before handling. Keep tightly closed and away from excessive heat and moisture. Do not use if blister is torn or broken.
